Friday Night Friends Program

"Friday Night Friends", started in Dallas, is a respite/recreational program designed specifically for those with special needs. A similar program is currently in the planning stages here in the Valley. SBARV , the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association and other special needs organizations have joined forces to make this monthly event a success.

FNF is open to everyone through application (links below) and there is no age limit. Medical staff will be onsite, along with community volunteers, to make each evening a safe, fun, and rewarding experience. Cave Spring Baptist Church Family Life Center will house the program, with more details available as plans gel. Email Carol McCulloch, or call the SBARV at 540-342-1231, x4010 for more information.

WHERE
Cave Spring Baptist Church Family Life Center
WHEN:
Friday, November 30, 6:30 p.m.—9:30 p.m.
There’ll be special crafts, games, favors, singing, and storytime.  We’ll also enjoy cake, and other light refreshments as we celebrate the true meaning of  the Christmas Season!

**Each participant is encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift for the moms at the Salvation Army’s Shelter, “The Turning Point.”  These can be simple toiletry items, women’s white socks, or make-up.  Children at the Shelter are always in need of “gifts to give their moms” at Christmas…please bring a smile to their faces by bringing gifts for them to share!**

  • SEE YOU NOVEMBER 30!
“FALL FUN FEST” coming  October 26 to FNF!!  Thanks to the generosity of Grandin Court Baptist Church and its “Sunshine Class,”  next month’s FNF will one of the most special yet!  Choosing  to  support  our program through their mission work, they are planning a night of wonderful food, fun, and fellowship here at GCBC.  There’ll be dinner, games, a moonwalk, and face painting, plus many other regular monthly activities.  Please sign up at our registration table if your family plans to attend, don’t forget to include the specific number.  You may also call 342-1231, x4010 (SBARV) to RSVP as we must have an accurate count for this event!  A special thanks goes to Garnett Wickline, one of our wonderful volunteers, whose “Sunshine Class” submitted FNF’s name for the mission project.  God bless your giving spirit!!

  • DON’T FORGET THAT NOVEMBER’S FNF
will meet on the 30th…this is a change from the usual fourth Friday.  This will also serve as our Christmas Party night as there will be no December FNF.  Regular fourth Fridays will resume in January as we “bring in the NEW YEAR together!

  • APPRECIATION GOES OUT TO
Edwina Lee for her generous donation to FNF this month, and also “thanks” to Larry McCulloch for giving our participants those neat balloons during last month’s “Firefighter’s Visit”!

  • NEXT MONTH
is shaping up extra special when FNF gets a visit from Roanoke Co. Firefighters and their friends, Freddie and Spot!  Please pass the word to others in the Special Needs Community...they’ll want to meet these guys too!  And let us know any “Do’s & Don’ts” regarding your child; for example, we’ve already asked the Fire Depart-ment NOT to use sirens due to the sensitivity issues some of our participants have.  We need to know about any other concerns, so please contact Carol McCulloch at calmc69@cox.net or call 342-1231,x4010.  The FNF Staff will do our very best to make sure it’s a fun night for everyone!

  • FNF WANTS YOUR  HELP...
in the near future two members of our medical team, Beth Lane and Debbie Dooley, will be developing and distributing a survey with the hope that all of you will take the time to respond to its questions.  We have been involved in FNF since January of this year, but felt it was time to ask YOU how we’re doing.  To date, all comments and feedback have been very positive...but we want to keep it that way.  When the survey is ready, you may pick up copies at the registration table, and return them there as well.

  • UPCOMING  CALENDAR  CHANGES–FNF
will change our November meeting time to Friday, November 30.  This will also serve as our Christmas Party as there’ll be no FNF in the month of December.  The regular 4th Friday schedule will resume in January, 2008, with a great New Year’s celebration planned.

  • BOOKS ARE NEEDED
for our reading area.  If you, or anyone you know, wants to donate children’s books or age appropriate books for teens or young adults, please let us know at the registration table, and we’ll see that someone accepts and stores them for FNF use.  Thanks so much!

  • AND REMEMBER–
any monetary donation made to FNF is tax  deductible by making checks payable to the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association (memo FNF Fund).  All contributions are deeply appreciated!  See you AUGUST 24!!
    ---Carol McCulloch

The Aloha Open House for "Friday Night Friends"  on January 26, 2007 was a tremendous success!  A big thank you to the FNF Team for months of hard work and dedication to this effort on behalf of ALL special needs! We especially appreciate Amy Whittaker, Red Cross PR Rep., Karen McNew @ WSLS, & Gene Marano, Mainstreet Newspapers for their help in promotion of the program. To RVBA and CSBC, we couldn't have made any headway without your partnerships, and everyone in attendance was so impressed with your outreach.
